At TAKVA, we did not see this traditional design as something that needed replacing. We saw it as a time-tested foundation that gave us the freedom to rethink fit, coverage and comfort for modern travel.

What is a telekung or mukena?
A telekung is a womenโs prayer garment traditionally worn in Malaysia, Singapore and Brunei. In Indonesia, a similar garment is known as a mukena.
The classic design usually consists of two pieces:
- A long upper garment that covers the hair, neck, shoulders, arms and torso
- A full-length skirt that provides loose lower-body coverage
Together, the two pieces create a complete prayer outfit that can be worn over ordinary clothing.
In English-speaking markets, including among shoppers searching for a prayer dress in the UK, this silhouette may simply be described as a two-piece prayer dress. However, the words telekung and mukena carry something more specific: a Southeast Asian tradition shaped by generations of everyday use.

Why has the traditional design lasted?
The telekung and mukena were designed around the actual movements of salah.
Their generous shape provides room for standing, bowing and sujud. The long upper layer covers the arms and torso without requiring separate sleeves or a hijab, while the skirt creates loose coverage from the waist down.
It is a simple system, but a highly effective one.

Traditionally, many telekung and mukena designs were made to be kept at home or in the masjid. Comfort and coverage came first, while portability was less important.

How has the telekung evolved?
Today, the telekung and mukena are available in far more forms than the traditional white prayer set.
Modern versions use different colours, prints and fabrics. Some have elasticated face openings, while others include adjustable details. Travel mukena designs are usually lighter and come with their own carrying pouch.
This evolution has made the style more portable, but it has also introduced compromises.
A lightweight fabric may pack down well but feel too sheer. A very loose face opening may fit more people but shift during prayer. An ultra-light upper garment may lift or flare during sujud. A small pouch may look convenient while the garment itself is difficult to fold back inside.
Calling something a travel prayer dress does not automatically make it well designed for travel.
The real challenge is not simply making a telekung smaller. It is preserving the qualities that made the traditional design dependable in the first place.
Tradition gave us the freedom to innovate
Because the essential silhouette was already time-tested, we could focus on the details that affect how a prayer dress performs in modern life.
We studied existing telekung, mukena and travel prayer dress designs to understand what worked, what did not and where women were being forced to compromise.
We considered questions such as:
- Does the face opening stay comfortably in place?
- Does the garment provide enough coverage during every prayer position?
- Is the material opaque without becoming heavy?
- Does the fabric feel comfortable in warm or enclosed spaces?
- Can the outfit be carried every day without taking over a handbag?
- What happens to an ultra-light upper garment during sujud?
- Can the entire set be packed away without a complicated folding process?
These are not decorative details. They determine whether a prayer dress remains in a suitcase or becomes something a woman actually carries.
Rethinking fit
Many prayer dresses rely on a fixed face opening. If it is too wide, it can shift and expose the hair or neck. If it is too narrow, it may feel restrictive.
SalahWear uses an adjustable face opening, allowing the fit around the face to be changed from approximately 26 to 50 cm.
This gives different wearers more control over the fit without losing the easy, slip-on character of a traditional telekung or mukena.
The aim was not to make the garment fitted. Prayerwear should remain loose. The aim was to make the areas that need security more adaptable.
Preserving generous coverage
Making a prayer dress compact can tempt designers to remove fabric. That solves the packing problem by creating another problem: reduced coverage.
We kept the recognisable two-piece Nusantara silhouette because it separates upper and lower coverage effectively. The hooded upper piece covers the hair, arms and torso, while the full-length skirt provides loose coverage below the waist.
It can be worn directly over everyday clothes, with no separate hijab required.
For women unfamiliar with the telekung or mukena, this is one of the designโs greatest advantages. It offers the convenience expected from a modern prayer dress without stripping away the coverage that made the traditional form so practical.
Finding comfort without unnecessary weight
Travel prayerwear needs to balance qualities that often work against each other.
It should feel light but not insubstantial, compact but not restrictive, and comfortable without becoming bulky.
Rather than choosing a fabric based only on how small it could fold, we considered how it behaved when worn. The material needed to move comfortably through salah, provide suitable coverage and remain practical enough for frequent packing.
That balance matters especially for anyone looking for a prayer dress in the UK to carry on commutes, holidays or long journeys. A garment that is too bulky is likely to be left behind. One that sacrifices comfort or coverage is unlikely to be trusted.
Solving the problem created by lighter fabric
Lightweight prayer dresses can flare during movement, particularly when lowering into sujud. This is not necessarily a sign of poor fabric. It is a natural consequence of reducing weight.
Instead of adding bulk back into the garment, we developed a more focused solution.
Each SalahWear set includes a weighted pin that connects the upper garment to the skirt at the waist. It helps hold the flowing top in place during sujud while allowing the rest of the garment to remain light and compact.

Why is the collection inspired by drinks?
SalahWearโs first collection is called Nomadica Blend 01: Nusantara.
The word Nusantara connects the collection to the Southeast Asian tradition behind its silhouette. Blend 01 reflects how familiar elements have been carefully brought together into something new.
