Is Masah on Socks Valid? Conditions Explained

Masah is the act of wiping over footwear during wudu instead of removing it and washing the feet underneath. It’s a concession (rukhsah) recognized across Sunni jurisprudence, rooted in hadith describing the Prophet ḿuḥammad ﷺ performing wudu and wiping over his khuffain (leather socks) rather than removing them. The clearest and most frequently cited narration comes from Al-Mughirah ibn Shu’bah, who reported that the Prophet ﷺ wiped over his khuffain rather than washing his feet during wudu (recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim).

The concession exists for a practical reason: it spares the wearer from removing footwear for every wudu throughout the day — useful while travelling, at work, or in cold weather. Modern wudhu socks extend the same ruling to socks that meet the conditions historically required of khuff.

One condition applies before the socks are even evaluated: they must be put on after a complete wudu, with the feet already washed — agreed upon across all four madhhabs. From there, the socks themselves must meet five conditions:

1. Ankle coverage — fully covers the ankle bone and the area normally washed during wudu.
2. Durability — sturdy enough to withstand ordinary walking, traditionally roughly three miles without tearing.
3. No significant holes — no tear or hole exposing three or more toes, or a substantial part of the foot.
4. Stays up without tying — remains in place through normal movement.
5. Water-resistance — thick or treated enough that water doesn't seep through when wiped. This is where leather khuff (naturally water-resistant) and modern fabric socks diverge most, and the condition ordinary cotton or wool socks are most likely to fail.

A note on madhhab variation: the four Sunni madhhabs — Hanafi, Shafi'i, Hanbali, and Maliki — all accept masah over khuff-type footwear as a valid concession, though they differ somewhat in emphasis (how strictly the durability and water-resistance conditions apply to socks versus leather khuff, and the precise scope of sufficient ankle coverage). Checking with a scholar familiar with your specific madhhab is worth doing if there's doubt about a particular pair.
