Are Wudhu Socks Halal? The Fatwa, Conditions, and How to Check

According to Islamic jurisprudence, masah is the wiping over the socks instead of washing the feet during wudhu. There is consensus among Ahl as-Sunnah that wiping upon leather socks is permissible — the prophetic, sunnah practice is supported by a large enough body of hadith to have reached the status of tawatur (mass-transmitted, definitively established).

“I was in the company of Allah's Apostle (Prophet Muhammad PBUH) on one of the journeys and he went out to answer the call of nature (and after he finished) I poured water and he performed ablution; he washed his face, forearms and passed his wet hand over his head and over the two Khuff, (leather socks).” — Narrated by Al-Mughira ibn Shu'bah

If you would like to wipe over socks, normal socks may not be permissible to wipe over. Modern socks — of any brand — must meet the following Islamic rulings before you are allowed to wipe over them, per the classical fuqaha's study of the khuffs worn at the time of the Sahabah:

• The socks should cover the ankle fully when you wear the socks — required across all four madhhabs. (Al Mousoo'ah al-fiqhiyyah al-Kuwaitiyyah 37/364)
  
• Durability over extended wear — The sock must be thick enough. For Hanafi: able to walk roughly three miles without shoes, without the bottom of the sock tearing. Shafi'i: strong enough for a person's basic chores across the masah window (one day/night for a resident, three days/nights for a traveller).   Free of holes — Hanafi: no hole exceeding the width of three of the smallest toes. Shafi'i and Hanbali: entirely free of holes. (Al Mousoo'ah al-fiqhiyyah al-Kuwaitiyyah 37/365)
  
• Stays on the leg without being tied or fastened.
  
• Fully waterproof socks — water poured over the sock should not seep through.
  

Note on madhhab variation: the durability and hole-tolerance standards differ slightly by school of thought (Hanafi, Shafi'i, Hanbali, Maliki) — worth knowing if you follow a specific madhhab's ruling closely.

• Whatever breaks wudu (state of purity) also breaks masah.
  
• Removing socks breaks masah — the feet must be washed again at the next wudu (a complete wudhu must be performed). If only one sock is removed, both socks must come off and both feet must be washed.
  
• Masah also ends when the time window after putting on the socks expires: 24 hours for a resident, 72 hours for a traveller.
